Piece of Paradise -

"Man can now fly in the air like a bird, swim under the ocean like a fish, he can burrow into the ground like a mole. Now if only he could walk the earth like a man, this would be paradise."

Today I visited a unique place in the world. The largest sand island in the world, 98% sand 2% rock. A world heritage listed site. Home of the last pure dingo population in Australia. Home to 7 out of the top 20 most deadliest snakes in the world. Fraser Island, or as the aboriginals called it - K'gari, meaning "paradise".

The tour started nice and early, hopping on the bus at 7:45. Already at the bus stop I met two lovely Finnish girls going on the tour with me, Anna and Marian. Getting on the 4WD bus we met our great tour guide, Cameron. This bloke really knows his stuff, the statistics, the tides, the history, the aboriginal culture, the fauna and flora, everything there is to know about the island.

Our first stop of the day was at the Maheno Shipwreck. The SS Maheno was a New Zealand ocean liner which on the way to being sold to a dealer from Osaka, was split from the boat towing it by a freak cyclone. It was eventually found beached on Fraser Island, but all attempts to refloat it failed. 80 years later the hulk of metal is still lying there, waiting for tourists to take pictures of it.

Next stop was The Pinnacles, beautiful peaks of coloured sands. Following that we stopped at Eli Creek, the largest freshwater creek on Fraser Island. Floating down with the current, I was strongly reminded of the Majrasa stream in the Golan.

After lunch we went for a swim in Lake McKenzie. A purely freshwater perched lake, the sand surrounding it is pure silica. The swim in it is supposed to be very healthy for your skin and they say you can come out looking 5 years younger. Luckily it didn't do that to me.

Finally we stopped at Central Station, walking a bit through the only rainforest in the world growing in sand and learning the history if the loggers' company with the island. On the way back to the barge we were blessed to pass a 3 month old dingo, who was very photogenic and came around all sides of the bus and waited for a while to make sure everyone got their snap.

I arrived back on the mainland with a taste for more and hoping to return to Fraser Island on another trip.
