Long-ceston -

"Before tracks were built, people rowed up to the cascades and scrambled up over the rocks to reach the best picnic spots."

After quite a long time in Launceston, staying a week-and-a-half here, I'm more than ready to move on.

I landed here on Wednesday ahead of the first Aussie Rules football pre-season match between my club Collingwood and the rivals Hawthorn. Before the match, once settled in the hostel, I managed to explore the centre of Lonnie (as it's known by the locals), including the street mall and synagogue, which is the second-oldest in Tasmania and Australia. I also visited the Queen Victoria Art Gallery, which had a couple of exhibits which interested me.

Later on, I geared up with my black-and-white wind breaker and scarf and walked to the stadium. The stadium was almost sold out, which is unusual for a pre-season game, but not abnormal for such a rivalry as Collingwood-Hawthorn. Taking my seat in the crowd, one of the first things that struck me was that the supporters were mixed up, unlike the soccer matches in Israel where the opposing supporters are often separated by fences and police. I found myself sitting next to a local Hawthorn supporter and surprisingly we had good chit-chat and a bit of banter in the breaks. The match itself was competitive by both teams with our youngsters and new signings playing well, leading at every change and finishing with a 44 point win. There was a lot of promise shown and I have a good feeling about the upcoming season.

The next day I visited the Queen Victoria Museum. The museum had several sections, including an interactive science section, an automobile display, model dinosaurs and bones, models of Tasmanian modern wildlife, and a war memorial. I found this quite a unique setup for a museum, but a very enjoyable one, as anyone can find their place in the big complex.

The following Sunday I went exploring around Lonnie's famous Cataract Gorge enjoying it's beauty. While wandering a lady called out "shalom" to me. Upon conversation with her I found that she and her husband are both not Jewish but love and support Israel. And this whole conversation started only because I was wearing my kippah and by it she identified me as an Israeli.

The next day I visited the local City Park, which was very peaceful. As well as the usual trees and flowers found in parks, Lonnie's is unique as they have an exhibit of Japanese Macaques. While the older ones laid around sunbathing and grooming each other, the young ones were monkeying around getting up to various antics.

On the Tuesday I took an organized tour to Freycinet National Park with Tours Tasmania. We were only two people on the tour, so our guide Ellie gave us a few options for the day and let us pick what we wanted to do. On the way to Freycinet, we stopped at East Coast Natureworld, where we saw animals including the young wombat Agnus, Tasmanian devils and kangaroos. We watched the Tasmanian devils being fed, witnessing the bone-crunching power their jaws hold, and then hand fed the kangaroos. Unfortunately, we had to continue with the tour as I could of spent all day at the park.

First stop we made at Freycinet was at the famous Wineglass Bay, and it's beauty definitely lives up to its reputation. Afterwards we lunched at another beautiful spot named Honeymoon Bay, and walked around Cape Tourville and then down to Gravelly Beach past Sleepy Bay. After a few tourists switching between the Launceston and Hobart vans which impressed me, showing the flexibility of the tour company, we travelled to the quaint Ross Village. There I saw the Ross Bridge, got a few souvenirs and had a nice chat with the local owner of the bakery.

Wednesday was a fast day, Taanit Esther, so I spent most of the day in the room and caught up with my prime minister Netanyahu's speech in front of the American congress (opinions can be asked of it privately). In the evening I went to the local rabbi's house for the megilla reading. Since I was outside my hometown of Jerusalem, Purim falls immediately following the fast, which made for a very fast reading of the megilla, which quite disappointed me, as it is one of my favourite parts of Purim. Following the megilla speed run, we had a fast breaking meal (breakfast?) with lovely hamantaschen made by the rabbi's wife.

On Purim afternoon, most of North Tasmania's Jews gathered together (still not that many) and we had a megilla (once again fast) and torah reading. After that we had a festive meal and a fun Purim poll conducted by the rabbi, including gems such as "how long is the average megilla reading" and "what is the rabbi's age". And a great time was had by all.

This Sunday I'm going on the Overland Track. Looking forward to it and I'll let you know how it was when I'm done!

Do I regret flying over to Tasmania earlier than needed to watch my boys play? NEVER!
