The Big Apple -

"What is a big city? Any place with ten bums. Less than that it is a village."

Welcome to the big city. Here I am in New York, feeling small and insignificant in this country where everything is massive. Seriously, everything is supersized, the buildings, the food, the distance, just everything.

So after a four hour wait in Moscow on the way I landed 20 minutes earlier than expected at JFK airport, but that just meant the plane had to idle on the runway for 20 minutes. After getting through the airport with no hassle my cousin Beth picked me up and we arrived at the beautiful little town of Leonia in New Jersey. With all of the trees and the signs in English, it was almost like being back in Caulfield, except that here they drive on the right side of the road.

On my first full day in the US I went with Beth into the city, with my first goal to see the Statue of Liberty. As the tickets to Liberty Island were a bit pricey (and anyway it was impossible to climb up to her crown) we decided to take the Staten Island ferry and got good views of Lady L that way. After the ferry we walked to Ground Zero, the memorial site for the events of 9/11. It is a beautiful and haunting memorial for the two giant towers and many lives lost. On the way back we also stopped for a taste of Times Square, even getting our faces on a billboard, and had a look in Grand Central Station.

The next day I explored by myself, having a bit of a nature-emphasised day. I started the day by walking the 2.3 kms of the High Line in a southerly direction. Quite a beautiful park with the plants growing on the old train tracks, I was strongly reminded of the railway park back in Jerusalem. From the end of the park I took the subway uptown and walked to Central Park via the Chrysler Building and the Rockefeller Center. Central Park was amazing - a massive park in the middle of Manhattan. The place has a wide variety of places to rest, walk or bike around, and many people use it. I even ran into an Israeli family who it turned out are from my neighbourhood. Due to the sheer size of the park I only walked through the southern half, and will have to return to complete it.

The following day, Beth's kids joined us to tour the city. As we got off the subway at Fifth Avenue, we realised we were right next to the New York Public Library and decided to have a look inside. My two little reader cousins straight away found books while I explored the library. One of the highlights of the library is that they have the original collection of toys that A.A. Milne based the stories of Winnie-the-Pooh on. We then walked to the Empire State Building and ascended to the 86th floor. From there we had stunning panoramic views of New York's many buildings bordered by rivers. After descending we met another cousin, Rebecca and her gorgeous little ankle biter for dinner.

Now I'm on the way to West Hartford to spend shabbat and shavuot with friends there.

Shabbat Shalom & Hag Sameach!
